REMEMBERING IS LIVING Nº 1

ASSAD AWARDED THE ORDER OF THE SOUTHERN CROSS IN 2010

The photo in this post shows a moment from the smiling ceremony that took place in 2010. The then-acting President of the Republic, accompanied by Marisa Letícia, then First Lady, awarded Bashar Al Assad, the dictator of Syria, the Order of the Southern Cross.

He is accompanied by Asma Assad (last on the left in the photo), his wife, and a co-worker of the bloody dictatorship initiated in 1971 by Hafez Al Assad, Bashar's father and Asma's father-in-law. Bashar's government continued a spiral of horrors paved with hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of refugees, an action carried out with unparalleled mastery by the friendly Assad couple.

It is important to consider that the endless history of crimes against humanity carried out by the Assad couple has always had the connivance of supporters abroad, including, of course, as the photo shows, the then-acting President of Brazil. Bashar's actions, which became known for the savage repression of security services previously organized by his father, using chemical weapons widely used against the Syrian people during the Arab Spring, for the indiscriminate bombing of the civilian population by his Russian and Iranian supporters, in addition to, of course, the usual (and indigestible) menu of acts of torture, rape of women and kidnapping of children, were imposed on all sectors and communities of the Syrian people.

All of this makes the awarding of the decoration to a criminal of the stature of Bashar Al Assad an unmeasurable shame, an affront to any Brazilian citizen who has the slightest bit of shame. Namely, the National Order of the Southern Cross is restricted to, as such, foreign "personalities."

Thus, the awarding of the honor is carried out by a Council of the Order, in which the Grand Master (the highest rank of the order) stands in a commanding position, held by the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil and by the Chancellor of the Order, held by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

In this sense, the National Order of the Southern Cross is the highest honor granted to foreign citizens, and the act of granting the honor occurs by presidential decree, thus constituting an act of foreign relations.

Thus, coherently, the decoration of the Order of the Southern Cross kindly awarded to the Butcher of Damascus was signed by the then President of the Republic and also by Celso Amorim, his paradigmatic advisor in the area of International Relations.

Yes, of course, we can list a host of criticisms of this controversial initiative (one, obviously, among hundreds and thousands of others), the responsibility of the President elected in 2003 and reelected in 2006. However, now, in the wake of the fall of the Assad family dictatorship, which transformed Syria, like North Korea, into an intriguing hereditary republic, the corpses keep coming out of the closet.

The latest information reports, for example, the veritable human slaughterhouse in Sednaya prison, maintained by the Assad family dictatorship on the outskirts of Damascus. The news that is coming in reports a prison that would make German Nazis envious (To learn more, access the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjLdahRxALE ).

That said, from what it was exposed, any individual, provided they have a brain at least slightly superior to that of an invertebrate, could ask:

1. What was the point of offering the Order of the Southern Cross to butchers like Bashar Al Assad?

2. Why has the Brazilian government not yet spoken out on this matter and, justifiably, not withdrawn the award from this murderer?

3. What are they waiting for to nullify the award?
